About me

Steven James Grattan

Trilingual journalist, editor and newspaper founder

I’m a trilingual multimedia journalist reporting on the intersection of environment, politics, and human rights across Latin America. As the Amazon Rainforest and Deforestation Reporter for The Associated Press, I cover some of the world’s most remote and threatened ecosystems — producing in-depth features and breaking news across text and video.

With over thirteen years of experience in Colombia and Brazil, I bring a strong multimedia skill set and on-camera presence, regularly appearing in broadcast segments and crafting visual storytelling for global audiences.

I grew up in Northern Ireland, where the legacy of conflict was woven into everyday life. Experiencing a society emerging from decades of violence shaped my understanding of how politics and identity intersect — and inspired my commitment to covering communities rebuilding after conflict. That perspective later drew me to Colombia, where I’ve spent years reporting on peace, power, and the people driving change.

Previously, I worked for Reuters in Brazil, covering regional politics, economics, and climate issues, and have contributed to leading outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC, The Guardian, Financial Times, and Al Jazeera.

Based in Bogotá, I’ve also taught International Journalism at the University of Rosario and co-founded The Bogotá Post, Colombia’s English-language newspaper. NCTJ- and HEFAT-trained, my reporting spans the Amazon Basin, the Andes, and beyond — documenting deforestation, Indigenous resistance, migration, politics and conflict through stories centered on the people at the heart of global change.
